When you rent a car, your credit card is not charged until you return the car. At that point you can either have them charge your card or pay cash.
They keep your card information on record for incidentals. If you return the car in good condition, you don’t have to worry about a thing. If however you trash the rental car, then your card will be charged for the repairs.
The guy who answered is spot on I know for a fact that Dollar will not take either pre paid or debit cards it has to be a credit card I have never had any problems with money wrongfully be taken off of my card, in any event I am not sure why you would worried about not getting the money back on a card it is no different to not getting the cash back. If you use a credit card then the money is back instantly.
The car rental locations will put a hold on a credit card, freezing those funds until you return the vehicle. While some companies offer the option of applying for a cash id card, it usually takes about 6 weeks to process and involves credit checks and a larger deposit.
When you return the vehicle and want to pay in cash, You will see the hold back on your credit card within 48 hours. Most locations that take debit cards for the hold state that it can take up to two weeks for the hold to be credited back to your account.. it often depends on the bank.

The rental agencies only take credit cards because they want to make sure they have access to enough credit. If you destroy the car, damage it, or steal it, etc. But you do not have to purchase their car insurance IF you have full coverage on your own car.
