i
About the R. Guild Gray Virtual Gallery

In its continued commitment to arts education Las Vegas Schools have created the R. Guild Gray Virtual Gallery. This gallery serves as an innovative way to allow students and faculty of the Las Vegas School District to display their artwork. This is an excellent way to connect to the community and use of modern technology. The R. Guild Gray Virtual Gallery is divided into three sections. The first section is devoted to the display of student artwork. The second section is used to exhibit the art of teachers in the Las Vegas School District. The final area is dedicated to the works of R. Guild Gray. The Virtual Gallery uses interactive navigation that allows you to move through the displays and simply click on the artwork you want view and it will expand to a full screen view. The whole site is designed to mimic a real museum type experience. To progress through the Virtual Gallery, you use arrows at the bottom of the screen to move around the rooms. Each room contains between twelve to twenty pieces. The Virtual Gallery has two floors with the bottom floor housing students works. The R. Guild Gray Virtual Gallery has rotating collection and is used to showcase the art skills of the elementary, middle and high school students in the Las Vegas School District. The Virtual Gallery can be accessed from this web site; http://ccsd.net/vg2000/ .

An Important Educator in the Las Vegas School District

R. Guild Gray, the namesake for the R. Guild Gray Virtual Gallery, was an influential poet, historian, educator and politician. Mr. Gray was an important figure in the Las Vegas School District. Mr. Gray passed away in 1998. Guild Gray was a transplant to Nevada, but made a large impact. He had his secondary and some university in Reno. Mr. Gray went on to become the Las Vegas School District superintendent and served in this position until 1961. Later Mr. Gray was elected to the Nevada State Assembly, where he served on the Education Committee. In this capacity, he often fought for the needs of the Las Vegas School District. Mr. Gray was an avid historian. Many people, especially the students at the Gray Elementary School in the Las Vegas School District which was named in his honor, knew him as a reservoir of knowledge of Nevada history and lore. Later in life he became a poet and photography traveling the Nevada country side writing and taking landscape photos. He wrote several books of poetry, fiction and history. His most famous books include The Treble V, a story containing the history and legends of cattle ranchers in northeastern Nevada, and Nature Sings, a collection of Gray’s poetry and photographs of the Great Basin filled with his reflections on life and death. This is why R. Guild Gray was the perfect choice for the name of the Virtual Gallery.

Las Vegas Academy, one of the magnet schools of the Las Vegas Public School District, has prepared a series of student produced and student led theater performances.

The Five Plays

• You Want Freedom Fries With That?
“An original theater piece about being an American teenager in an increasingly small world, written and conceived by the Roncalli Drama Festival Ensemble, performed at the Roncalli Drama Festival in Poggibonsi, Siena, Italy, in the heart of Tuscany.”
• Mixed Babies
“Five teenage girls of color discuss life, love, relationships, and friendship in this compelling short play.”
• Coffee Con Carnage
“An original sketch conceived and performed by the students of the Mime and Improvisation Class.”
• Sorry, Wrong Number
“A classic one act thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.”
• The Intermission
“A playwright listens clandestinely to the reactions of the intermission crowd at the premiere of his new play: a surprisingly insightful look at how we perceive what others think about our art.”

History of the Las Vegas Academy

Established in 1992 by the Las Vegas Public School District and area universities, the Las Vegas Academy is committed to fostering student skills in the arts and communication. This magnet school includes students from all over Clark County at its campus in an historic urban shopping district.

Las Vegas Schools students pursue a major in one of the following fields: dance, vocal music, instrumental music, international studies, piano, theater, theater technology, and visual arts. The school operates longer than other schools in the area in order to pack in all the subjects that students need to study in this arts intensive program. Classes are organized on a block schedule, in which students take regular academic classes every other day and major classes every day.

This aggressive approach to education has earned the Las Vegas Academy many honors, both state and nationwide. Including awards from the White House, Senators Reid, Bryan, and Ensign, former Governor Miler and former Las Vegas mayor Jones, the Academy has also garnered attention from the International Network of Performing and Visual Arts schools and been labeled a STAR school. In addition to winning three Grammy Signature School awards, the Academy has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as both a New American High School and a U.S. Blue Ribbon School.

The Student Experience at Las Vegas Academy

Students of the Las Vegas Academy compete through a tough screening process just to attend, including an audition as well as maintaining a high grade point average in their regular academic subjects. While students at other area high schools attend class for 50 minutes a day, students at Las Vegas Academy go for 86 minutes. The school day also goes one hour longer overall. This hard work pays off with over sixty percent of graduates enrolling in four year universities. The series of short plays to be produced by the theater and theater technology departments will be just one of many ways in which Las Vegas Academy students present their hard work and dedication to the local community.

Product Description
If your choice for president was a dishonest and corrupt politician, or an honest semi-pro golfer whose gorgeous wife made money the old fashion way, and his campaign manager is a Las Vegas gambling talk show host, who would you vote for? If you could ask any presidential candidate a question while they re hooked up to a lie detector, what would you ask them? One Nation Under Par is a funny and fast paced story that hits a hole-in-one for virtually anyone that has interest in politics, golf, sports, gambling, music, mild levels of absurdity, and even unusual pet tricks. While taking his last shot to become a professional touring golfer, Jeff Taylor became entangled in an unprecedented betting scheme and found himself unofficially in the presidential election race. Except for being brutally honest, he had no other skills to run for the most important position in the world. However, Jeff found a new desire to run for president, and actually put up a fighting chance in his effort to win the election with the aid of his off-beat team members. But evil political forces deployed a comical band of thugs, attempting to squash his claim to the presidential throne using any means necessary. If you’re into golf and political humor, grab your clubs and enjoy the 18 hysterical holes of One Nation Under Par.

Things to Do in Las Vegas With Friends

i
Discover all the fun and exciting things to do in Las Vegas. Grab your friends and have an awesome Sin City experience for your much-needed break from the ordinary.

The number of hotel choices in Las Vegas can be overwhelming. The best thing to do is choose one that offers the best deals. One of the most notable hotels in the city is Wynn Las Vegas. Room rates can be pricey, but not on weekdays. Book a 640 square foot-standard room at Wynn Las Vegas and enjoy all the luxurious amenities the hotel offers at an affordable price.

The first thing you should do in Las Vegas is to head to Stratosphere Tower, the tallest free-standing observation deck in the United States. At the top, you get to have a spectacular view of the entire Las Vegas Boulevard, popularly known as the Las Vegas Strip, glowing with all the colorful lights of the hotels and other surrounding establishments, the suburban communities, and even Mt. Charleston from a distance.

Liberace Museum is one of the most frequented attractions in Nevada and is often included in every visitor’s “things to do in Las Vegas” list. Visit the Liberace Museum and pay tribute to the man that helped put Las Vegas in the map. The museum is home to the world’s largest rhinestone along with Liberace’s collection of pianos, cars, costumes and more.

Gambling is undoubtedly the most popular of all things to do in Las Vegas. If you do not gamble or have no idea how these games of chance are played, Las Vegas Hilton holds gambling classes (also called gaming classes) for everyone who wants to learn the mechanisms of poker, baccarat and all the other table games. Be sure to check on the schedule and rates for these classes. More often than not, though, the gambling classes are free!

Las Vegas offers world-class shopping experience to both its residents and visitors. Check out the Forum Shops located in one of the buildings of Caesars Palace Hotel Casino. Upscale shops such as Jimmy Choo, Gucci and Versace all in an infrastructure reminiscent of ancient Roman architecture will surely entice people to make shopping one of the things to do in their Las Vegas itinerary. All the shopping will most certainly make you and your friends all worked up. Pamper yourselves with a foot or full body massage at The Spa in the Treasure Island. The amiable staff alone will make you feel relaxed. Other services offered are facials and body treatments, to name a few.

Las Vegas is a dining mecca. Whether you are looking for the all-American cuisine or you want to try something new, Las Vegas has a place for you. Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House at the MGM Grand, is a must-try. Reservations are not necessary, but highly-recommended. After the very filling meal at Emeril’s, go to Coyote Cafe for desserts, which is also located in the same hotel.

One thing you and your friends should definitely experience in Las Vegas is its incomparable nightlife. Dress up and hit the dance floor at Tao located in the Venetian Hotel. Chances are, you might be drinking, dancing and rubbing elbows with Hollywood’s party people.

This Las Vegas experience will make you realize why the city is coined the Entertainment Capital of the World. From morning to very late night, you will certainly find your hands full of all the interesting things to do in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas Schools Thirsting for More Funding

i
Families who are considering a move to Las Vegas in order to be closer to all that fun may need to think twice before doing so. The entire state is suffering a drought on educational funding, and Las Vegas Schools are no exception.

Despite a recent Review-Journal poll that had 25 percent of respondents saying that education should be the top priority for the Nevada Legislature, Governor Jim Gibbons, is instead pushing for improved traffic congestion.

Among the many issues voters are concerned over, class-size, per-pupil spending, and all-day kindergarten are tops. Las Vegas Schools, along with the other districts statewide, have the nation’s lowest per-pupil expenditure, highest-class sizes, and a pressing shortage of teachers.

Speaker of the Assembly, Barbara Buckley refuses to blame the lower tax revenue the state is experiencing on a slower housing market. “Mediocrity in education funding guarantees mediocrity,” she says. Buckley says that educational issues were put last in the budget. Senator Dina Titus disagrees by stating that “When the state has to make up the hole for property taxes at the local level, that doesn’t leave a lot for education and that’s unfortunate.” This doesn’t seem to make sense, in light of the fact that Las Vegas schools are in the fastest-growing district in the nation, and they aren’t getting any financial help on the local level to improve conditions.

State law does require lawmakers to make up for lost money when the tax revenue goes down, but then the state finds itself burning the candle at both ends. So where is the revenue from this “fastest-growing district in the nation” going? It doesn’t seem to be going towards Las Vegas schools.

Improvements that education proponents are looking at for Las Vegas Schools, like all day kindergarten which is seen by most as highly beneficial to students, will likely die at the Legislative level, because of funding issues. Las Vegas schools are hard hit by all of this. Gov. Gibbons even said in his State of the State address that putting off all-day kindergarten was the “fiscally responsible thing to do.” Then he went on to add that money had been found in the budget to work on the state’s roadways.

One solution that Las Vegas Schools Superintendent Walt Ruffles has implemented is year-round schools. Nine elementary schools are scheduled to begin the year-round calendar this August. While there is no evidence that students perform better in a traditional 9-month schedule as opposed to the year-round calendar, parents aren’t convinced. District officials also say the Las Vegas Schools cannot afford any more portable classrooms, and the switch to the year-round calendar will allow Las Vegas schools to house more students.

The Nevada State Education Association is considering a plan to go to the voters to solve the funding crisis: it could lobby the Legislature to put the measure on a statewide ballot, or it could collect signatures to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot. However, it’s a risky strategy that has failed in 2004. Overall, the communities around Las Vegas schools are supportive of teachers, but don’t think that the Las Vegas schools are very good. Getting the ballot passed could be difficult, unless a standard of excellence for the schools is attached to it.

Las Vegas Schools could be great, if only the politicos in Carson City would get their heads out of the asphalt and into the classrooms.
