If it is a particular show that you want to see it is best to buy ahead of time. Some shows sell out each night. If you are flexible on shows I would wait until I get here. With the coupons all over the place and the half price ticket stores you can get a good show at half price.
No but at least you are guaranteed to get the date/time you want. Online will give you a confirmation that you take to the ticket window for real tickets when you arrive in town (time limits so read the paperwork).
The best tickets get held back for the whales and regular gamblers. They almost always release the best seats in the house at the box office just before shows start.

It really depends which shows you would like to see. If its one of the popular cirque de soleil shows (love, KA, Le Reve) then you might want to book a head. They offer pretty good discounts and save you the wait in line at the discount ticket booth. For the none popular shows you can usually get 50% price vouchers on the strip…
